Today I shall discuss a topic that is very common, i.e. “How to Crack Your Job Interview?” But I can assure you that my experience will reduce the fear and anxiety associated with interviews.
First of all, before going for an interview, you should decide whether the job opportunity is actually suitable for you. Assess factors such as whether the city or location is financially viable, relocation feasibility, and other practical considerations. You should also compare the offered salary structure with your current salary because, in many cases, the CTC structure of another company may reduce your basic salary or take-home pay.
Most interviewers ask whether the candidate has any questions. You should use this opportunity to ask about:
- Relocation allowance (if relocation is required)
- Travel allowance
- Overtime allowance
- Other employee benefits
Now I come to the main part of the job interview, especially for pharmaceutical manufacturing companies. In the pharmaceutical industry, companies are broadly classified into API and Formulation companies. In my opinion, fresh pharma professionals who want to build a career in manufacturing should begin with formulation companies because they offer:
- Greater process complexity
- Wider equipment exposure
- More product variety
- Better learning opportunities
- Greater regulatory exposure
Although comparisons can be made between sectors, I generally do not recommend changing your career stream unless it is absolutely necessary or strategically beneficial.
The most important part of a job interview is your CV (Resume). Spend sufficient time preparing it because in 80–90% of interviews, the interviewer evaluates your previous experience based on your resume.
If you are a fresher, you should develop a strong understanding of:
- Pharmaceutics
- Physical Pharmacy
- Basic Chemistry
- Drug Manufacturing Fundamentals
Experienced candidates should not rely only on past knowledge. They should stay updated with current industry developments, including:
- ICH Guidelines
- 21 CFR (especially Part 11)
- FDA Form 483
- APIC Guidelines
- Schedule M (India)
Today, GAMP (Good Automated Manufacturing Practice) has become an important topic because many pharmaceutical companies have adopted digital manufacturing systems where electronic records and electronic signatures serve as reliable audit trails.
Tips to Crack Your Job Interview
- Remember: A job interview is a mind game. You will be judged to assess your intelligence, technical knowledge, patience, confidence, smartness, gait, posture, speech, and overall personality. Evaluate yourself honestly before attending the interview.
- Prepare in advance: Before attending an interview, create imaginary interview situations and think about the questions that may be asked. This preparation helps reduce nervousness.
- Practice your answers: The strongest part of your preparation should be your CV (Resume). Most interview questions are based on the information in your resume. Create likely questions and practice answering them before the interview. This will make you more confident, prompt, and articulate.
Example
Suppose the interviewer asks:
“What is Data Integrity?”
If you answer:
“Data Integrity is the reliability of data created as evidence of a procedure according to predetermined written instructions, ensuring that the data are attributable, legible, contemporaneous, original, and accurate.”
Then be prepared for follow-up questions such as:
- What is data?
- Why should data be attributable?
- What do you mean by contemporaneous?
- Why should data be accurate and original?
- What do you mean by electronic data?
- What is metadata?
Practicing these types of follow-up questions will strengthen your technical understanding and improve your interview performance.
